Gorkha Savings & Credit Cooperative

Building Trust, Creating Opportunities
Background

About Us

Our Journey

Under Nepal's Cooperative Act (2064), the Gorkha Savings & Credit Cooperative Ltd. was duly registered at the Division Cooperative Office, Bhadrapur on 2058-01-30 (Baisakh 30, 2058). The founding shareholders comprised 245 members—72 women and 175 men—who subscribed NPR 2,266,000 in share capital. The cooperative began financial operations on 2059-02-01.

Now in its 24th year after completing 23 years, the cooperative was founded to contribute to the community's economic, social, and cultural transformation through the cooperative model. By the end of FY 2081/82, it had 2,253 shareholder-members (1,012 men and 1,041 women), 28 child savers, and 4 affiliated groups, with total share capital of NPR 42,996,000. The working area covers Wards 1–20 of Dharan Sub‑Metropolitan City, Sunsari District, where it operates savings and credit services.

Guided by the belief that an institution bearing the name Gorkha Savings & Credit must also work for the welfare of society, the cooperative strives to make its services responsive to members' needs and to the times—adopting appropriate policies, procedures, and technologies to deliver fast, reliable, and quality services. From this fiscal year, the cooperative aims to create self‑employment for five members as part of a plan for sustainable growth. Members are encouraged to recognize their responsibility to the institution: to invest their capital, receive fair returns, and—through financial transactions—become enterprising entrepreneurs. Our community faces both challenges and opportunities; with resilience, challenges can be turned into opportunities and benefits.

Government policy identifies cooperatives as a key pillar of Nepal's “three‑pillar economy,” underscoring their role in national development. The cooperative ethos—“one for all and all for one”—should guide practice. To keep the sector orderly and disciplined, the cooperative operates under the monitoring and supervision of the Nepal Savings and Credit Central Cooperative Union, and prepares annual plans and budgets to address members’ financial needs. With this conviction, we have prepared the Annual Business Plan for FY 2081/82.
